Pain Management

Hello There!

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Dr. John Bissell and I'm a Physician and Physiatrist practicing within the realm of physical medicine and rehabilitation. I specialize in sports and musculoskeletal medicine, specifically nonoperative treatment of overused and under-recovered injuries. I first became interested in this field because of my interest in outdoor sports. I continued to draw inspiration from many friends of mine who suffered chronic injuries. And, well... here I am now almost 30 years later still doing what I love most!

I attended Rutgers College and graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in biochemistry. I later attended the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and graduated in 1985, focusing on primary care and occupational medicine until 1994, when I returned to complete my residency at the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System/UCLA-Affiliated Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Program. During my last year, I served as chief resident, and upon graduating, taught there for another year before serving as the medical director of two inpatient rehabilitation units in Southern Colorado.

In 2003, I established an outpatient private practice focused on pain and sports medicine, also known as APEX Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Throughout my success, my love for learning only kept growing. During my time in private practice, I have pursued further educational goals and achieved qualifications in sports medicine, electromyography/nerve conduction studies, pain medicine, and spinal cord injury.

My approach to physical medicine and rehabilitation has changed with time. Initially, I conventionally treated many injuries, however, I was never consistently satisfied with my patients' outcomes. Upon further research, I discovered a new alternative- regenerative injection therapy. You can learn more about this here. Overall, my goal has been and always will be to alleviate pain and restore the involved joint or body part to its previous level of functioning and provide my patients the chance to live a happier, pain-free life.

Ketamine is a field that I've been involved with extensively for the last six years. Research shows and the patients in my office have proven that Ketamine can safely be used to treat chronic pain as well as a host of mental health disorders. Those suffering from depression, anxiety, PTSD and even bi-polar can greatly benefit from Ketamine therapy. Ketamine therapy may be administered intravenously or through a muscle. Insurance covers Ketamine therapy in full. Whether you have Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare or commercial insurance Ketamine is a fully covered service that can be life-changing for so many. If you suffer with chronic pain, neuropathy, depression, anxiety or bi-polar disorder we'd love to see how we can help you alleviate your symptoms using Ketamine. Ketamine is safe, effective and proven to relieve some of patient's most bothersome symptoms.

In my spare time I enjoy rock climbing, traveling and the company of my dog Fauche. I also enjoy visiting with my beautiful children and grand children whom I adore. Colorado Springs has been my home for many, many years. I enjoy living here taking in the beautiful landscape and numerous opportunities for outdoor recreation. I am an avid biker and hiker. You'll find me on the trail with my dog Fauche when I'm not in the clinic!
